FAQs

  • Our primary motivation was that when people hear or see “Insight Garden Program”, they frequently make the reasonable assumption that we are a single garden program, as opposed to a statewide organization with multi-faceted programming in nine prisons and holistic reentry services in southern, central, and northern California. We’ve been reflecting a lot on our journey, on what we have achieved, and what work there is ahead. Our prison garden programs are the roots of, and inspiration for, everything we’ve grown since our first flower garden at San Quentin more than 20 years ago. At this point, however, we are so much more than the name Insight Garden Program describes. Our new name, Land Together, speaks to our foundational commitment to nurturing connections to each other and to the earth, but it also reflects our more expansive approach and aspirations. Land Together leaves plenty of room to grow.

  • We engaged in more than a year of collective brainstorming, designing, and decision-making that involved consultation with participants and supporters, and the active engagement and direct contributions of staff and board members.

  • our new logo, a sage plant (a California native that we grow in all our prison gardens and our participants regularly use for its flavor, nutritional, and medicinal benefits) with birds (blue, to represent the color of CA prison uniforms) in flight mimicking flowers growing from the leaves, represents our ongoing organizational commitment to nurturing connection, healing, growth, and freedom.

  • Absolutely not. We remain firmly grounded in the same core principles that guided our founding more than 20 years ago.

  • The short answer: No. We have no big changes planned for our in-prison or reentry programs.

The long answer: We are a learning organization that values feedback, innovation, and adaptability. Over the decades since our founding, we have evolved, expanded, and improved upon our programs, strategies, and curricula. We have changed in many ways since our founding, and we remain open to change. Our new name is a reflection of past and potential growth, rather than a signal of specific changes in the pipeline.

  • We will be changing the name from all the sites but all the supporters will automatically join us.

  • The change will take place in phases, starting with the launch of our new website and social media accounts on November 20th. By early 2025, the official (IRS) name change will be complete.

  • Eventually they will change but, not to worry, Insight Garden Program email addresses will continue to get you to all the right people and places for many months to come.

  • For now, please continue to write checks to Insight Garden Program. We will update our community when the official name change for donations will go into effect.  Even when the name change is “legal” however, we will keep IGP as a DBA so that we can receive and cash checks made out to both names.

  • No, our bank account details and donation process will remain exactly the same. Eventually, rather than Insight Garden Program, you will see our new name (Land Together) on your statement.

  • If you have further questions about our name and other changes, please email our Communications Manager at hannah@insightgardenprogram.org.
